Bloganuary writing prompt
What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

Soccer.

In Italy soccer is THE SPORT. Everyone has its own favorite team and there are a huge amount of italian who live their lives around the soccer team they are in love with. It’s not only in Italy where people are crazy for football. South America, Europe are the two contintents where people are also ready to die for the team.

In my family we were never so crazy, but my dad was a pretty passionate Juventus fans (if you don’t know what Juventus is, it is the most successful italian team in Italy, because in Europe Milan is the most successful italian team). Since the day i was born, my dad was a Juventus Fans and it was faithful until the day he died. Personally, i have never been a huge fans. I loved the sport and i was happy for the winning team, no matter what it was. The problem is that you can’t say something like that in Italy: you must pick a side and stick with it until the day you die. When i was at school, i was somehow forced to “defend” the team i loved, like it was an honor thing.

Since in moved to Germany, i have been able to enjoy soccer on my terms. I don’t cheer excusively for this ot that team, but i love the stories behind the sport. I love when a small team is able to beat the entire competition and win and i am amazed when a big team have problems or when a team starts a glorious comeback. For example, i loved the Leicester fairytale, i appreciated Union Berlin story and i was thrilled by Borussia Dortmund in 2023. it is so cool not to be attached by a team because it gives me the opportunity to get interested from this or that team. With this mentality, i enjoy every single matchday or every single match i watch, because there is always a surprise.

Motorsport.

I watch Motorsport since a very young age. The first memories i have of me watching cars or bike on television was 1996 and i was four years old.

Since that moment, i wake up early in the morning, i stood up late in the evening just to watch the Gran Prix live. When i was a kid i was crazy. Now that i got old and with the streaming opportunities i have, i don’t need to pull some stupid stunt just to watch the race live. I can re-watch the entire event when i want, thanks to the on-demand and youtube.

There are weekend where i am able to watch MotoGP, Formula One, Superbike and Indycar in one day. I am not kidding. There have been weekends where i started on Saturday morning and i ended my weekend on Monday (because Indycar is always on air in the night between Sunday and Monday). Luckly for me i am still single, because no woman will be ready to give up most of the week-end between March and November.

I watch motorsport because i appreciate those incredible drivers and the performances they can deliver every single weekend and because of the technology and logistic behing the event. Sometimes i am more fascinated by the new upgrades the team bring to the track than the race itself. I know, sometimes i can be a freak, but i can do nothing about it. When i see a new wing, a new chassies or some upgrade i am amazed, because behind that piece there are talented and well-educated people, who work for days just to improve the performances by a tenth of a second. For example in a Formula One Team there are something like 1000 people working just to make sue that the team is the best. How can’t you love something like that?

Wrestling.

Wrestling exists since the beginning of the 20th Centuries. However, the sport entertainment concept was only created in the 80s of the 20th Century. We all know performers like Hulk Hogan or Rick Flair. In Italy wrestling was not on television. The very first time i watched wrestling on tv was in 2004 with WWE. That was a huge moment for every single teenager in the country. Between 2004 and 2006 if you were a teenager, SmackDown was something you didn’t want to miss. I never missed a show on Tv. My family didn’t understand what i loved in watching two people faking a fight. Well, i could not explain it. I just loved it. Then, after 2006, wrestling was on Tv but on Sky (a pay-per-view Channel) and i my family could not afford to pay so much money. So, i had to give up the love of wrestling.

Then Youtube happened. As soon as i realised that WWE uploaded all the main parts of its weekly shows (in the beginning was RAW, then NXT and SmackDown), i started to watch wrestling again. Only in 2024 i started a subscription with the WWE Network and now i can watch all the Events.

I love wrestling for the stories. I like how all the characters develop, how storyline started and how they finished. More than that, i love the entrances and all the show around a wrestling match. It is simply fascinating. I wanted to watch a show live, because the WWE comes once a Year in Germany, but the prices were simply too high. It’s not a big deal after all: i can watch all those incredible performers live on internet.

final conclusion.

This are the sport i like the most. I tried other sports, but i get bored pretty quickly. I tried American Football, rugby and tennis but i don’t like the game. I understand the rules, but i got bored pretty quick. I stick with soccer, motorsport and wrestling and i will be happy.
